50 Small Steps

In our first PCOS meeting last month Carolyn (our fabulous Nurse Practitioner!) shared “50 Small Steps” that we can take to lose weight (if you need to) and to just be healthier in general.  These steps are great for anyone trying to conceive (healthy body=increased fertility), struggling with PCOS, or just wanting a healthier lifestyle.  I’m only going to tackle 5 at a time…who wants to be overwhelmed and discouraged by trying to make 50 changes at once?!?

1. Cut portions by 1/4-1/2

Did you know that restaurants serve up portions that usually go way beyond what a single serving should be?  (Ummm, yeah…check out this research done by the CDC for more info.)  A child’s portion from the menu is usually what a normal portion should be!  Soooo…when you go out to eat, split an entree with your husband or friend to cut down on the fat and calories.  When you cook at home, use a smaller plate instead of a full-sized dinner plate.  You’ll be amazed at how filling that small plate up with food will satisfy you–not only in your tummy but visually at well.  Seeing a full plate of food in front of you (even if the plate is smaller!) allows you to feel like you are not missing out.

2. Drink a glass of water or unsweetened beverage before meals

We’ve all heard that drinking water will help you lose weight…and we’ve all heard that research shows that it isn’t true…so what now?  Well, water flushes the toxins out of your body, keeps your cells hydrated and healthy which leads to good skin and lots of other things.  I am a huge proponent for water.  If I don’t get enough water during the day I can tell.  I have a headache and no energy.  I say “DRINK WATER!”

Now you know my opinion.  Here is a fact:  drinking water before meals fills you up which causes you to eat less.  Eating less is a good thing if you are trying to lose weight.  Discovery.com had a good article related to water and weight loss and can back this info up.

3. Park further away in parking lots

4. Use the restroom furthest from where you are

5. Take one extra set of stairs each day

Numbers 3, 4, and 5 are kind of  one and the same.  The idea is that you need to incorporate more exercise into your life–and who doesn’t?!  If you are like most people, you don’t really enjoy exercising.  If this is the case, then take some small steps (get it?…small steps?) to gradually increase your physical activity.  Park in the last row of the parking lot when you go shopping.  When you need to take a restroom break pick the bathroom furthest from where you are–at home, at work, in the mall, etc.–and take a hike to find it.  Next time you go to grab the elevator take the stairs instead–and try to make a habit of it!
