Drink Plenty Of Fluids

Hmmmm…you could refer back to part two and say, “but you told me to limit my alcohol intake!”  Yes, I did.  And I meant it.  By fluids, I mean water.  Water, water, and more water! 

Shopping, parties, life in general make it easy to become dehydrated.  You go out for a marathon shopping spree with your mom or girlfriends and the next thing you know, you haven’t had a sip of anything (other than the tea or soda you had with lunch) all day.  You spend an evening with friends or coworkers celebrating the holidays and by the end of the night you’ve had your 2 (that’s right…only 2) drinks and your water glass sits lonely and neglected.  The caffeine in your tea or soda and the alcohol in your cocktail both lead to–guess what–that’s right, dehydration! 

You need water.  Water transports many nutrients to your organ systems and carries excess heat, waste products and toxins safely out of your body.  If you are hydrated, you feel better.  Your body runs better.

No matter how busy you are, there are some simple ways to make sure that you can sneak some water into your routine. 

Start your day off with water.  As soon as you get up, drink a full glass.  You’ll be surprised at how good this can make you feel.  Drinking a glass of cool water signals your body that it is time to get up!  It plumps up those thirsty cells and gets your metabolism going.

Keep a bottle of water with you as you shop and travel.  Keep a larger bottle in your car.  Keep a small bottle in your purse.  Sip frequently!

Drink water with your meals.  Not only will you be cutting calories and doing something good for yourself, you will be saving money when you eat out…on average a restaurant beverage will cost you around $2 for a tea or soda and between $5-$8 for a glass of wine or mixed drink.  Water, as long as it is not bottled, is FREE!

If you are at a party or dinner, alternate each cocktail with a glass of water.

I know that if you are used to consuming a lot of sodas that water can seem kind of boring.  It doesn’t have to be.  Try a squeeze of lemon or lime or even orange in your water.  If you are longing for the bubbles of the soda try a sparkling water with a splash of fresh juice.  Although I am not a big fan of artificial sweeteners, I will tell you that if you really have a hard time consuming enough water, go for the little packets of flavored mix such as Crystal Light.  They taste good and let’s face it, if you don’t like water and you do like lemonade or tea, it’s a great substitute.

If you aren’t used to drinking water, I encourage you to give it a try.  Commit for a week to starting off your day with a glass and getting enough in to make your body happy.  Let me know your results.  After all, what have you got to lose other than bad habits?
