Premature Ovarian Failure

A recent question asked by someone on Facebook was about Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) and if having an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) was effective for someone with POF.  One of our nurse practitioner’s responded with this answer:

“Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is a relatively UNcommon problem.  It is thought to be most likely an auto immune issue and is often seen in women with other auto immune problems.  It has not been linked to the use of any type of contraception (IUDs or any other form.)  It is defined as menopause before age 40.  Unfortunately IUI is not a treatment for POF as IUI depends upon having eggs eligible for fertilization and in the case of POF, egg production halts.  There is no real treatment for POF, but women can use donor eggs to initiate a pregnancy.  There is no reason that they would not be able to successfully carry a donor egg initiated pregnancy to term as all other pelvic organs (uterus) are structurally normal.”
