PHYSICIAN BIOGRAPHY
Dr. John Nichols is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, Georgia, where he obtained his Medical Degree (MD) in 1988. While at MCG, Dr. Nichols was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society during his junior year of medical school and received the Professor C. Iverson Bryans Jr. “Student Award for Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology” and the Merck Manual Award, given only to students in the top ten percent of the graduating class.

Dr. John Nichols went on to receive his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and stayed on an additional year as a faculty member after his residency.

Dr. John Nichols then completed a two-year fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. While in fellowship training, Dr. Nichols received the prestigious American Society of Reproductive Medicine/Mead Johnson Laboratories Research Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine Award for his work in estrogen expression in breast adipose tissue and its relationship to breast cancer.

After his fellowship, Dr. John Nichols took a faculty position as an Assistant Professor at East Carolina University (ECU) School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina where he became Director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) program. While at ECU, Dr. John Nichols was involved with the teaching of medical students at ECU School of Medicine and training residents in the Department of OB/GYN at ECU and Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

In 1997, Dr. John Nichols was recruited to come to Greenville Hospital Systems (GHS) in Greenville, South Carolina in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in the Department of OB/GYN. Dr. Nichols duties included a busy infertility practice, advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries, clinical research and teaching and training of both medical students and OB/GYN residents. Dr. Nichols served as the Co-Director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program and Director of Resident Research Program at GHS’s Center For Women’s Medicine. Dr. Nichols’s interest in clinical research involved being a Principal Investigator for over 15 studies including studying new medications for the treatment of infertility, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), menopause, and new formulations of oral contraception pills as well as surgical treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding with endometrial ablations.

Dr. John Nichols was also one of the primary U.S. investigators for the Essure Procedure from Conceptus, a non-incisional, hysteroscopic tubal sterilization technique. Dr. Nichols is well published with over 15 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters in addition to over 50 abstracts, presentations and lectures in his professional career. He is a noted expert in infertility, endometriosis, PCOS, pubertal abnormalities, reproductive endocrine disorders and menopause and in advanced surgical procedures.

Dr. John Nichols left the Greenville Hospital System in January of 2003 to pursue a long-time goal of private practice and to offer an alternative practice of reproductive medicine in the Upstate area.
